Alternative career paths in Education

While teaching we interact with students with different language skills and levels. We come to know about their career goals and challenges. We know where education system needs improvement. We know who are the decision makers and who can bring the change. We know social impact that education can bring.

Teaching is not always for a cause or for passion. More often it is a job or profession. Nothing wrong. Sometimes, teachers get fade up with the way education system works and decide to quit. The reason may be low pay, work stress, bad boss, uneducated ministers as decision makers, too busy parents, colleagues with contacts at top, and many more.

Here are the opportunities to contribute to education sector, beyond 9 to 5 job or workplace politics:
Vocational trainer
Observe where jobs are today. Learn that skill and transfer those skills to college students. Meet possible employers and try to know what type of skilled-staff they are looking for. You can also look at offering job-ready skills such as job search skills, writing CV, facing interview, etc. You can also make videos on your favorite topics, to start with.

Translator
Learn one more language in addition to English language, if you haven’t learnt yet. There are certified translation courses available too. Take a translated book and English version of it. Compare two versions and learn.

Trainer
You can learn soft-skills, which are non-vocational in the nature. Corporate, schools/colleges, government department, NGOs, etc. need to train their staff and this training is not always in-house. You can get trained in the areas of time management, teamwork, creativity, stress management, work-life balance, mental and physical fitness, and anything you can think a staff member may need. Once you gain mastery, start training.

Course Content developer
Your teaching experience will help you judge what is missing in courses, where lies redundancy, what is complex and what part of the course is too obvious. Many private and government schools/colleges need course developers. Online courses providers too need content developer.

Education consultant
Those who are working at the top level of schools/colleges are so engaged and involved in routine that sometimes they can’t see what an ‘outsider’ can observe. Offer consultancy to educational institutions on how to further improve their image, how to make their students stand out in crowd, how to use technologies in teaching-learning, how to maintain relations with parents, managing regulatory compliance, etc.

Researcher
Start reading about what all has been written so far on education systems, governing policy, stakeholders in education sector, teachers’ training and development, and topics like this. Improve your research skills. Don’t forget to publish your piece of research.

Start an NGO
You can start your own NGO after associating yourself for some time with NGOs working on education issues. You must learn legal obligations and fundraising techniques. The best part here is you can reach to poor and needy students without boundaries of time or location.

Start a school
Make a list of what you want to change as a teacher. Open your own school with a determination of bring that change in your school. If there is will, there are ways to manage investments required to start and run school. All you need is support from good people.

Language editor
Language editing is not only correcting SPAG (Spelling, Punctuation, And Grammar). It is about proper usage of words, using idioms, proverbs, and cliches, rewriting sentences/paragraphs, and rearranging central ideas, if needed. Language editing is needed by students, teachers, writers, copywriters, etc.

Personal tutor
Due to skewed teacher-student ration, parents and students need personal or group tuition. Tutoring is like ‘be your own boss’. You decide working hours, location, and method of teaching. The income is good and regular. The competition is tough but it all depends on you how you establish yourself as a tutor and grow. The demand is also huge for teaching to foreign students online.

Any of these diversification will take time and commitment. You need to know your strengths and weaknesses from your sincere students, trusted colleagues, and honest friends; before you leave your current secured job.
